Festival Hydro is updating its electricity system by installing advanced grid sensing meters across its service territory. The Stratford based utility serves about 23,000 customers and is using this innovative technology to improve reliability, prepare for future energy needs, and better understand how electricity flows through the system.
As part of its modernization plan, Festival Hydro is replacing its existing smart meter system with Landis+Gyr’s Revelo grid sensing platform. The new meters collect high resolution data that gives the utility a clearer picture of what is happening across the distribution system. This helps Festival Hydro spot problems faster and integrate modern technologies, like electric vehicles and other clean energy solutions, into the grid easier.
Festival Hydro reviewed several options before choosing the new system.
“When we evaluated new AMI systems, our top priority was the ability to react to the opportunities we have today, while being able to address anticipated future technology needs” said Bryon Hartung, Vice President of Engineering at Festival Hydro. The Revelo platform supports flexible demand management and long term system planning, making it an ideal fit for the utility’s needs.
Festival Hydro is already considering how the technology can support their customers. Once the installation is complete, the utility can use the platform’s information to help shape future rate design and demand management programs. Festival Hydro will also connect the meters to its outage system, making it easier to spot outages faster, restore power more quickly, and reduce unnecessary trips by crews.
The new meters also help Festival Hydro keep a closer eye on equipment, manage power quality, and support future technologies like electric vehicles and local energy generation. By investing in this technology now, Festival Hydro is building a power system that is smarter, more reliable, and able to adapt as energy needs change, while keeping costs affordable for customers.
