Enova Leads Ontario’s Grid Modernization with AI and DSO Innovation

At its Victoria Street office in Kitchener, Enova launched a Distribution System Operator (DSO) study and lab demonstration, supported in part by the Electrical Distributors Association’s (EDA) LDC Tomorrow Fund. This project explores the feasibility of a DSO model—where local utilities actively manage distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar panels, batteries, and demand response systems.

The lab simulates real-time market operations, allowing DERs to bid into a local energy market. It demonstrates how a DSO can optimize grid reliability, reduce costs, and empower customers to participate in energy markets. This project enabled Enova to build a scaled model of a functional DSO and conduct a detailed feasibility study on one of its feeders.

Complementing this effort is Enova’s AI-Based Load Forecasting and Network-Constrained Optimization Project, developed in partnership with GridS2 Inc. and partially funded by a $750,000 grant from NRCan’s Energy Innovation Program. This project uses artificial intelligence to predict demand and optimize the dispatch of DERs in real time.

By operating a distribution-level electricity market, Enova can improve grid efficiency while avoiding costly infrastructure upgrades. DER providers submit bids, and the system selects the best resource available, based on price and grid constraints—creating a dynamic, transactive energy platform.

In addition to grid modernization, this project also focuses on public engagement, by sharing insights to raise awareness and support policy development. According to its most recent Annual Report, Enova will continue to investigate, analyze, and develop capabilities towards becoming a Distribution System Operator.

Together, these projects position Enova as a leader in smart grid innovation. By integrating AI and market-based mechanisms at the distribution level, Enova is building a more resilient, cost-effective, and customer-centric electricity system.
