In a remarkable display of readiness and bravery, powerline crews from Bluewater Power, ELK Energy, ERTH Power, Entegrus, and Essex Power mobilized to assist with emergency response efforts in Florida following last year’s devastating hurricanes. Although their mission was ultimately called off, the swift and coordinated response of these teams highlights their unwavering commitment to mutual aid and community support.
In early October, Hydro One sent 100 power line workers to Georgia to assist Georgia Power with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and 150 members to Florida to help with Hurricane Milton recovery efforts.
Within just 24 hours of receiving the call for assistance, a convoy of skilled linemen from these Ontario-based utilities was on the road, prepared to restore power and aid in recovery efforts for Florida Power & Light (FPL) customers. This rapid mobilization underscores the exceptional preparedness and dedication of these companies to provide critical mutual support in times of crisis.
Jim Hogan, President and CEO of Entegrus, expressed pride in the crew’s quick response, stating, "We are incredibly proud of how our team came together to prepare and deploy in such a short time. While our crew won’t be assisting on-site in Florida, this experience reaffirms our commitment to providing aid in times of crisis".
The crews’ willingness to leave their homes and families at a moment’s notice to help those in need is a testament to their bravery and selflessness. These linemen were ready to face challenging, hazardous conditions and work tirelessly to restore power to communities devastated by the hurricane. Their actions reflect the core values of their respective companies, which prioritize safety, professionalism, and community service.
“We’re thankful that the hurricane damage in the southern U.S. was less than expected,” said Janice McMichael-Dennis, President and CEO, Bluewater Power. “Our teams in Ontario often work tirelessly, in hazardous conditions, to restore power to thousands of affected customers after extreme weather events.”
The support and solidarity shown by Ontario LDCs and their staff serve as an inspiring example of how utility companies can come together to make a difference in times of need. As these crews return home, their commitment to help others remains a powerful reminder of the critical role that utility workers play in disaster response and recovery. Their bravery and readiness to help, even when plans change, deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
