Burlington Hydro's Shadow Program Spotlights Departmental Collaboration

Burlington Hydro proudly announces the Job Shadow Program, its newest initiative designed to foster effective communication and collaboration between departments. This program gives Engineering employees hands-on experience in Burlington Hydro’s many operational areas. Participants gained valuable insight into processes they typically are not involved in. With increased efficiency and understanding between departments, Burlington Hydro can deliver better service to its customers.

After the pandemic, Burlington Hydro had an influx of new personnel. Management noted these new employees and saw an opportunity to introduce a program that would instill them with a sense of community and collaboration. Beginning in late 2022, Engineering Technicians were offered a two-week intensive, where they would be given the opportunity to shadow the Powerlines, Metering, and Substations departments. After the program was complete, participants would share what they had learned with the entire engineering group, guaranteeing that their valuable lessons would benefit all employees.

Feedback from Engineering Technicians who participated in the program has been overwhelmingly positive. "I personally found the job shadowing very useful” said one participant, going on to describe it as a “great way to learn and interact with the crews, and as a by-product build a great rapport.”

The program was a resounding success. Burlington Hydro extended the program to run throughout 2023.
