Meter Service Providers Do More Than Maintain a Utility’s Cash Register

Author: Dale Flynn, General Manager, Infrastructure Services at ERTH Corporation

Meter Service Providers (MSPs) play a critical role in the meter-to-cash workflow within a utility. Beyond the traditional role of installing and registering metering instrumentation, maintaining ongoing reliability and data accuracy, and ensuring compliance with the IESO Market Rules, MSPs also help protect utilities from system failures and outages.

In partnership with ERTH Corporation, Lakefront Utilities eliminated a potential outage that could have affected the local hospital and many community stakeholders. ERTH was selected as a trusted MSP partner to ensure system reliability and compliance with IESO Market Rules.

Lakefront Utilities contacted ERTH immediately after a potential transformer bushing failed causing an outage in the Town of Cobourg. ERTH began working with the utility to develop an action plan to replace the defective instrumentation, while remaining compliant with the IESO Market Rules. ERTH worked with the local utility to install new instrumentation equipment ensuring the safety, reliability and measurement compliance for the two main feeders to the community.

“ERTH MSP technical staff were a vital and trusted advisor, ensuring our stakeholders did not experience more power outages in the community related to instrumentation failure,” explained Michael Davison, Director of Engineering & Operations at Lakefront Utilities. “ERTH’s team was professional, knowledgeable and responsive to the needs of Lakefront Utilities, ensuring seamless project completion and compliance.”

As the first registered Meter Service Provider (MSP#1001) in Ontario, ERTH has more than twenty years of MSP experience and is a trusted partner to Lakefront Utilities and many other utilities across Ontario.
